Taronga Zoo is the Sydney city zoo in New South Wales , Australia . It was officially founded on November 7, 1916 and is located near Port Jackson in the suburb of Mosman . The zoo is run by the Taronga Conservation Society together with the Taronga Western Plains Zoo . The area is divided into eight zoogeographical regions and houses over 2,600 animals. The first elephant in Australia was born on July 4th, 2009 at Taronga Zoo.
