Tarrasfoot Tile Works

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tarrasfoot Tile Works are a former brickworks near the Scottish town of Langholm in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1988 the complex was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Duke of Buccleuch initiated the establishment in the early 19th century. The brick factory was in operation by 1857 at the latest. At first it mainly produced for the needs of the Dukes of Buccleuch and their tenants. The main products were D-shaped drainage pipes. The brick factory closed in 1969.

The buildings preserved today, with one exception, a production building, probably no longer date from the founding years. Using maps from the Ordnance Survey, it can be seen that they have been rebuilt twice over the years of operation. In 1998 the surviving buildings of the abandoned factory were added to the Scottish Register of Endangered Historic Monuments. Most recently, in 2014, the overall condition was classified as very poor with a high risk.

description

The former brickworks is isolated on the south bank of the Tarras Water , shortly before its confluence with the Esk . Langholm is about four kilometers to the northwest. Most of the buildings that have survived to this day date from the early 20th century. It is a Newcastle- type oven with entrances on the opposite end faces. A squat brick fireplace with steel reinforcement sits on top. The larger of the two two-story drying halls has an L-shaped floor plan, while the smaller one is elongated. In the well-ventilated interior there are tall wooden drying shelves.
