Tatamkhulu Africa

Tatamkhulu Africa ( December 7, 1920 - December 23, 2002 ) was a South African writer and poet .

Life

Tatamkhulu Afrika was born in Egypt and moved to South Africa as a child. He fought in World War II and was a member of the Umkhonto we Sizwe , the military wing of the African National Congress .

He wrote his first book Broken Earth at the age of 17, but it took more than 40 years for his second work, Nine Lives , to appear.

He died of injuries in a car accident in 2002, shortly after the publication of his last book, Bitter Eden .
