Pigeon mail (polka)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taubenpost is a polka -française by Johann Strauss II (op. 237). The work was first performed on February 26, 1860 in Vienna's Volksgarten .

Remarks

The polka was composed for Mardi Gras in 1860 and was originally announced under the name Der Liebesbote . It is not known who these messages were sent between by pigeon mail. Some Strauss biographers see a connection with the failed relationship between the composer and the Russian civil servant Olga Smirnitzkaja. But that too is just speculation. The work itself is not one of the composer's great successes.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 4 minutes and 41 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
