The blue-winged parakeet ( Psittacula columboides ), also called Blaugeflügelter parakeet, is occurring in the West Indies parrot species of the genus Parakeets (Psittacula). They inhabit the western coastal strip from Bombay to the province of Kerala in the south of the country.

features

The pigeon parakeet reaches a size of 37 cm. The roosters have a bluish-gray head, which is surrounded by a black and a bluish-green collar. In addition, the males have longer tail feathers with a dark blue top and a yellow bottom. The hens are more inconspicuous with their greyish-green head, which is surrounded by a light black collar. The beak is different in males and females. The upper bill of the male is bright red, the lower bill is black. The females have a black upper and lower bill. The iris of these parrots is bright yellow in the cockerels, in the hens it is not quite as pronounced.

habitat

The pigeon parakeets live in the hot lowlands or slightly hilly terrain, they can be found at an altitude of up to 1500 meters. When the flocks of pigeon parakeets meet plum-headed parakeets, they socialize with them and fly around together in larger troops. You can also find these parakeets in rubber or coffee plantations, but their great passion is the 18 m tall Indian coral tree . They are particularly fond of these particularly tall trees with their bright red flowers and nectar.

Reproduction

The breeding season of the pigeon parakeets begins in the winter months and usually lasts until January. They are cave breeders and lay 3–4 eggs in their nests. The chicks hatch after approx. 23 days, they leave the nest for the first time after 49 days and are independent just 2 weeks later. The young animals have gray-green plumage and the black neck ring is not yet fully developed. The very young pigeon parakeets have a pale orange-red bill, which turns black after about 6 weeks. Only in the case of the hens the beak remains black, the cocks slowly get a red upper bill again after 5–6 months.
