Friar's Croft pigeon tower

The pigeon tower at Friar's Croft is a pigeon tower in the Scottish town of Dunbar in the East Lothian council area . It is listed as a Scheduled Monument . A former inclusion in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A was revoked in 2016.

history

The pigeon tower is related to an abbey of the Trinitarian order . This was probably founded on the site in the 1240s by Countess Cristiana de Brus . From the abbey, which was dissolved in 1529, only the tower from the 15th century remains today. On the basis of archaeological investigations, it is understandable that this was once the central tower of the monastery church. However, it remains unclear whether the tower had a double function as a bell tower and pigeon tower from the start or was only converted into a pigeon tower after the site was abandoned.

description

The pigeon tower is in the center of Dunbar off Belhaven Road . The tower consists of a rubble masonry of rough-hewn red sandstone , in particular in the upper portion in uneven layers masonry was installed. The pigeon tower occupies a base area of 8.2 m in length and 3.7 m in width. A small blunt tower rises in the middle. It widens on the north and south sides and traces the shape of the formerly adjoining nave. The slate-covered roof areas indicate a relatively steep roof slope of the church. A small door on the south side leads into the interior of the tower. Originally it was an arched portal that was partially closed by masonry. Various entry holes lead into the interior. Heavy round arches support the central tower in which the nesting boxes are located.
