Diving shaft II

The diving shaft II is a historical special device for underwater work that is being converted into a museum ship in the Magdeburg trading port today .

The diving shaft was built in the Berlin shipyard Wenz & Co. in 1898 . With its help, work was possible in water up to three meters deep. A shaft that could be lowered vertically to this depth could be made water-free using compressed air. In particular, work on the river bed, e.g. preparations for blasting , could be carried out in this way. The diving shaft II does not have its own drive and therefore had to be towed to the respective locations. The on-board tools, such as drills and air hammers, were operated by means of an on-board steam engine . In 1971 the steam engine was replaced by a diesel engine. The renovation work took place in a Berlin repair yard.

In 2016, a berth on land was prepared in the immediate vicinity of the long-standing berth in the commercial harbor in order to integrate the diving shaft II into the historical ship museum and to restore it there. The renovation is financed as a work opportunity with additional expense allowance from the Magdeburg job center . In 2018, diving shaft II was lifted out of the water and onto the substructure. It should be accessible to visitors from 2020. The divers shaft II is located in the commercial port in the immediate vicinity of the already restored chain tugboat Gustav Zeuner . Also in 2018, the bucket chain floating excavator "Otter" and a lighter were lifted ashore, which, like diving shaft II, will be restored and made accessible.
