Plunger engine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Plunger vs. Crosshead

The plunger piston engine is an internal combustion engine ( diesel or Otto engine ) in which the piston is connected directly to the crankshaft via the piston pin and the connecting rod , in contrast to the crosshead engine . For large strokes , the connecting rod of the plunger must also be adequately lengthened in order to reduce the lateral forces of the piston and the angular movements of the connecting rod in the cylinder. In the case of large-volume, long-stroke engines, an intermediate crosshead is therefore preferred.
