The Thousand Buddha Caves of Kumtura (Qumtura) ( Chinese 库 木 吐 喇 千佛洞 , Pinyin Kùmùtǔlā Qiānfódòng , English Kumtura Thousand Buddha Caves ) in the district of Kuqa (also Kucha, Kutscha etc., 库车 县 ) in the Uyghur Autonomous Region Xinjiang is 25 km west of Kuqa on the left bank of the Muzart River ( Weihe ).
The earliest were dug in the 4th century. They are famous for their ancient Qiuci (Kucha) style Buddhist murals .
A distinction is made between three construction phases in the construction of the caves: 5th – 7th. Century, 8th – 9th centuries and 10. – 11. Century.
The caves have been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (1-42) since 1961 and UNESCO has provided funds for their restoration.
At the beginning of the 20th century they were visited by Japanese, German, Russian and French expeditions.
