Millennial linden tree (Luckenwalde)
The thousand year old linden is a very old tree in the Elsthal in Luckenwalde .
It is a winter lime tree ( Tilia cordata ), which was first referred to as the "millennial lime tree" on a historical postcard. It is certainly not 1000 years old, it was probably planted there by monks in the 13th century. At that point they had dammed the Nuthe and built a water mill . The linden tree was probably planted to provide a landmark for the mill. The mill later fell into disrepair and inspired the Schönhannchen legend. Today the linden tree is a registered natural monument .
In February 2014, the linden tree had a trunk circumference of around 7.13 m at a height of 1.30 m.
