Thousand and one

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A thousand and one or 1001 is a fairly easy to learn card game that quickly familiarizes a player with the basic structures of trick and trump card games . The name comes from the number of points with which the game was previously ended.

game

The game is played with three players and a 24-card hand of French playing cards .

goal of the game

The aim is to be the first to achieve 1001 points. With the lighter type of billing, it is sufficient to achieve 100 points.

procedure

The dealer is drawn by lots and in clockwise order gives each player two three cards and one two cards. The player to the left of the dealer leads first. The ranking of the cards is ace, ten, king, queen, jack, nine. At the beginning there is no trump suit, i.e. the highest card in the called suit of a trick wins the trick and the winner of the trick leads.

Trump and messages

In order to make a suit a trump, the lead player can or should report a pair consisting of a king and queen. In addition to the fact that this color then becomes the trump card, this earns him points, namely:

in diamonds 40 points,
in heart 60 points,
in spades 80 points,
in cross 100 points.

When reporting, however, the reporter must either lead the queen or the king of this report to the trick. The same player or another player can then report a different, but higher-ranking pair for another trick. The trump suit changes again after this message. This means that the pair of crosses can always be reported, but the pair of diamonds only as the very first in the game.

As soon as a trump is played, it will of course beat the wrong suits, but there is no compulsion to play trump if you do not have a wrong suit.

Billing

The points are counted as follows:

Ace 11 points,
Tens 10 points,
King 4 points,
Queen 3 points,
Jack 2 points.

So there are 120 points to be won, plus the bonuses for the reports. Put simply, the points are divided by ten, with a five being rounded off as an exception, unless you have taken the last trick. With 100 of these points you win the game.

If you prefer to do the 'original' accounting, the points are all counted and the player who was the first to score 1001 points wins.

Four players play

Exactly the same rules apply to a four-player game, except that eight and sevens are also mixed in.

variants

Virgin

If a player has not taken a trick at the end of a round, he becomes a 'virgin' and receives 100 (or 10) additional points.

1001 with charms

This widespread variant is a further approach to Skat , as it also brings the principle of stimulation closer to the players . The changed rules make the game more complex. In the variant "1001 with charms" there are some changes in the game flow:

  • In general, all cards on a Skat hand are played; if there are four players, the two red sevens are removed.
  • Two cards are dealt into the “stick”, “pot” or “skat” when dealing. These cards are given to the player who bids the most.
  • After the deal, the bidding begins with the player sitting clockwise after the dealer. In ascending order, the number of points the players believe they have achieved is outbid. If a player does not want to outbid any further, he will announce this. When all other players have dropped out of bidding, the highest bidder receives the stick. Before the start of the game, he must "press" two cards again, ie discard them. These cards count at the end of the round. The most attractive one plays.
  • If a player does not reach the bid number, this number will be deducted from his points.
  • If a player forgets to "press", a throw is made. The playmaker is deducted 120 points, while 120 points are distributed to the remaining players.
  • A report only counts if the reporting player has also taken a trick.
  • Reports are always possible regardless of their value, i.e. first 100 and then 40. Players over 900 points are no longer allowed to report.

Tips on how to play

  • When reporting, it is better to play the queen than the king, as this card is often lost and the queen is worth one counting point less.
  • If you have two pairs to report, the question is always whether you only report the higher value, since on the other hand you could get the points for reporting both pairs. In doing so, you run the risk of not being able to report the second pair, since you are forced to play the queen or king when reporting. The owner of the ace or ten in this suit, however, then leads to the next trick and may have another message himself. So here you have to weigh up whether you are good in the lower suit, or if you have other aces, you should start with the lower number.
