The taxing stone

The Taxing Stone ( German  Steuerstein - also called Laicht Alpin or Laight Alpyn ) is a menhir ( English Standing stone ) in a drywall dam , immediately east of the old cannon battery on Little Laight Hill in Cairnryan on Loch Ryan near Stranraer in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland . It measures 1.7 m in height, 0.7 × 0.5 m at the base and is oriented east-west.

He is said to bear his nickname in memory of the funeral of Alpin, the former king of the Scots of Dalriada , who was murdered in Glenapp in 741. Graffiti with the date 1720 are engraved on the east side of the stone.

Little Laight Hill forest plantation was also a border between the ancient Galloway and Carrick kingdoms.

Nearby are the Long Tom on Milldown Hill and the Joug Stone .
