Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) is a manufacturer-independent custom recovery system for Android devices that is available under an open source license .

history

The project was originally only available for the HTC EVO 4G to allow porting from WiMAX to CM7 . It was then made available for several devices until it became one of the most popular custom recovery systems for Android devices.

With the Fairphone 2 , TWRP is part of the open source version of Fairphone OS (with the suffix “Open”), which can be installed as an alternative to the regular Android operating system (called “Fairphone OS” without “Open”).

Functions

TWRP is written once to the existing recovery partition for installation via the manufacturer- dependent bootloader of the Android device. Then TWRP can be started independently of the system via the bootloader and can be operated via its own touch surface.

TWRP is mostly used to do a full backup of partitions such as B. the system, boot, cache or user partition or to restore the system. It also enables the installation of custom ROMs , kernels , addons and other mods , such as rooting the Android device, but also cleaning up (unnecessary) files, the so-called wiping .

TWRP has its own file manager , a terminal emulator , and data transfer via MTP is possible. Using an Android Debug Bridge (ADB) integrated in TWRP , it is also possible to access the device directly via USB, thus allowing a Linux shell to be started directly (with root rights).

At the beginning of 2016, the version numbering was changed, in which the first three numbers indicate the version number, the fourth number, which is separated by a minus, indicates updates for a specific device.
