The Fairphone 2 , model name FP2 , is a modular smartphone announced by the Dutch company Fairphone BV in 2014 and delivered between 2016 and 2019. It was brought onto the market with the aim of being sustainable, durable and environmentally friendly , manufactured with conflict-free metals as far as possible and as easy to expand and upgrade as possible. It followed the Fairphone First Edition (FP1 and FP1U), which could only partially meet these goals. In mid-2019, Fairphone BV announced that the Fairphone 2 was sold out, but the supply of spare parts would still be available. The successor model is the Fairphone 3 .
Modular construction
The Fairphone 2 relies on a high degree of modularity to enable users to easily repair them and thus reduce electronic waste. For this purpose, the telephone was divided into seven modules that can be exchanged with little effort. The display can be exchanged without additional tools.
The individual modules are:
- an external housing
- a battery
- a core unit (with chipset, memory, modem, antennas, SIM & MicroSD card slot and sensors)
- a screen
- a receiver module (with receiver, front camera, headphone connection)
- a camera module (with rear camera and flash), which has been delivered in an improved version since August 2017
- a loudspeaker module (with loudspeaker, vibration motor, main microphone and USB port)
The Fairphone 2 has had the German Blue Angel seal of sustainability since October 2016 .
Orders, delivery
When the first pictures from the second Fairphone were released on June 16, 2015, advance orders at a price of 525 euros in the summer and deliveries of the first devices in autumn 2015 were planned.
The Fairphone 2 could be pre-ordered from mid-July 2015 . 17,418 devices had been pre-ordered by the end of September 2015. This exceeded the self-imposed goal of 15,000 pre-orders for the start of production.
At the end of October, Fairphone BV announced that the first devices would not be delivered as planned in November, but only in December. The reason given was production delays because some components needed to be improved in the short term. After further delays, delivery began shortly before Christmas 2015. This made the Fairphone 2 the first modular smartphone to have arrived in everyday life and the Project Ara was overtaken by Google.
So far, around 100,000 Fairphone 2 have been sold (as of November 2018).
Operating systems
The Fairphone 2 was initially delivered with an operating system based on Android 5.1 (Lollipop) with the usual Google Mobile Services and GApps as well as a few Fairphone -specific adjustments. The latter include adjustments to the user interface ( Edge Swipe , Recent Contacts and App Life Cycle ) and the preinstalled apps Privacy Impact and Peace of Mind . In addition to this operating system, Fairphone offers an alternative Android operating system with Fairphone Open OS without GApps and without Google Mobile Services , with TWRP recovery system and with root rights that can be activated easily and without loss of warranty claims.
In April 2017, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow was officially released for the Fairphone 2. The update to version 7.1.2 was released in November 2018. On June 16, 2020 it was announced that there was a beta version for the update to Android 9 .
In addition, Fairphone BV has repeatedly expressed sympathy for alternative operating systems., Within the first two years (until 2017) ports of LineageOS , Sailfish OS , and Ubuntu Touch were provided by committed users, but not officially supported by Fairphone BV. The development of Firefox OS has since been discontinued, but there were working beta versions until 2016. Since the Fairphone 2 is based on a standard System-on-a-Chip (SoC) from Qualcomm , all operating systems require non-free binary blobs , so there will be no completely free operating system (such as Replicant ) for the Fairphone 2 in the foreseeable future .
