The Fairphone 3 , model name FP3 , is a modular smartphone from the Dutch company Fairphone BV, which was announced on August 27, 2019 and has been on the market since September 3, 2019. It is available in European retail outlets - according to the manufacturer in 1,500 shops. Around 43,000 units were sold in 2019. It follows the Fairphone 2 (FP2) and, like it, should be sustainable, durable and environmentally friendly and, as far as possible, be manufactured with conflict-free metals. The iFixit website gives the Fairphone 3 the highest rating for its repairability.
Modular construction
The Fairphone 3 has seven modules that can be replaced with a standard Phillips screwdriver (included). The modules are available in the manufacturer's shop and cost between 20 and 90 euros.
- Back cover (no tools required)
- Battery (no tools required)
- Sub-module with USB socket, vibration motor and primary microphone
- speaker
- Top module (selfie camera, secondary microphone, sensors, headphone jack)
- Camera module
- Display module
With the Fairphone 3, attention was paid to increased device stability. In the previous model, the mechanism for tool-free display replacement was designed for a rare application (in the event that the display breaks and has to be replaced), but was often used by some users to demonstrate the modularity of the smartphone. Frequent opening and closing resulted in loose contacts in some cases, which impaired functionality. The developers drew conclusions for the Fairphone from this experience : The Fairphone 3 uses more screws than the Fairphone 2. The display is also fixed with screws instead of brackets. For the same reason, the spring contacts of the previous model have been replaced by pressure contacts.
equipment
On January 30, 2020, Fairphone announced that in-ear headphones can now also be purchased. These also work with any other device with a 3.5mm headphone socket and are modular so that the cable can be exchanged independently of the "earphones".
At the end of February 2020, Fairphone started a survey in its own community forum about the color of the soon-to-be-released protective covers for the Fairphone 3. The colors green and "frosty" (translucent) won. As a result, as planned and announced before the survey, the black protective cover was first published. More colors are to follow.
Since June 2020, there have also been two different types of scratch protection display films in Fairphones' online shop . One variant is a physical blue light filter which "protects the user's eyes from overexertion", the other is a privacy screen .
Operating systems
The Fairphone 3 with Android 9 with Google Play services ("StockROM") is delivered as standard. In contrast to the Fairphone 2, there were few adjustments to the user interface.
Since a Fairphone Open OS version was also offered for the previous Fairphone model and Fairphone had announced that it would also investigate the installation of alternative operating systems on the Fairphone 3, the question arose early on in its own community forum whether it was an open Faiphone OS would give for the new model. In April 2020, after a survey in the forum, a cooperation with the favorite / e / was announced. Since then, the Fairphone 3 can be ordered preinstalled directly with / e / OS in the / e / online shop, or it can be installed manually afterwards.
