Francisco Expedito Lopes

Francisco Expedito Lopes (born July 8, 1914 in Meruoca , Sobral , Ceará , Brazil , † July 2, 1957 in Garanhuns ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Garanhuns .

Life

Francisco Expedito Lopes received the in Rome on October 30, 1938 sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on August 30, 1948 at the age of only 34 as the first bishop of the diocese of Oeiras, which was established at the end of 1944 . The Bishop of Sobral , José Tupinambá da Frota , ordained him episcopal on December 12th of the same year . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Limoeiro do Norte , Aureliano de Matos , and the Bishop of Caxias do Maranhão , Luís Gonzaga da Cunha Marelim CM .

On August 24, 1954, Pope Pius XII appointed him. to the Bishop of Garanhuns . On July 1, 1957, he was gunned down in the episcopal residence by a priest whom he had threatened to suspend from the priesthood for moral misconduct. The next morning he died of the gunshot wounds in the Dom Moura Regional Hospital .

The diocese of Garanhuns initiated the process of beatification for him as a " martyr for the defense of morality". The files were handed over to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome in 2004 .
