Bas van Abel
Bas van Abel (born August 18, 1977 in Nijmegen ) is a Dutch designer , electrical engineer and entrepreneur in the field of social business .
Origin and education
Van Abel was born in Nijmegen in 1977. From 1997 to 2002 he studied interaction design at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht , and in 2000 he completed a parallel degree as an electrical engineer and programmer at the Technical University of Delft .
Career
Since 2010, Bas van Abel has been working for the non-profit organization Waag in Amsterdam, which deals with the interfaces between art, technology and electronic media, on projects under the aspects of sustainability and fair trade in the field of entertainment and communication electronics . This ultimately led to the founding of Fairphone as an exemplary implementation of an alternative by manufacturing a smartphone in a modular design that strives for the fairest possible extraction of raw materials, fair trade and fair manufacturing conditions as well as longevity and reparability . In corresponding tests, the current model Fairphone 2 regularly landed in first place.
The company has sold 160,000 smartphones so far (as of Oct. 2018), and Bas van Abel has received multiple awards for Fairphone.
In October 2018 van Abel gave up the position as CEO , his successor became the previous managing director Eva Gouwens. Van Abel moved to Fairphone's board of directors with the self-chosen goal of focusing more on the company's further strategic direction.
