The Fairphone First Edition (German: first edition), also Fairphone  1 , model names FP1 and FP1U , is a smartphone from the Dutch company Fairphone BV , which was produced under license in China from 2013. At the end of 2017, Fairphone BV's support ended after four years. The declared goal of longevity could therefore not be achieved.

When developing the device, the focus was on longevity, procurement of metals from conflict-free mining areas, fair working conditions in production and transparency. The first generation Fairphone is a licensing model without any in-house development worth mentioning. The pre-installed operating system is a slightly adapted Android , which was developed by Kwamecorp under the name Fairphone OS . It had its own launcher and factory root access . The Fairphone can be operated with two SIM cards . It contains 16 GB of flash memory and two cameras.

License production

The contract manufacturer is based in Chongqing and belongs to A'Hong aka Changhong , a large Chinese electronics company. He paid the assembly workers in production for Fairphone a little more than usual and guaranteed them one day off a week. A small social fund was set up for the entire workforce and a works council was elected to decide how to use it.

Models

First Edition (FP1, 2013)

From May 14, 2013, the Fairphone FP1 could be pre-ordered at a price of 325 euros. When 5,000 pre-orders were reached on June 4th, Fairphone announced that it would produce 20,000 Fairphones. On September 5, 2013, the planning was increased to 25,000 devices, which were already sold out on November 13, 2013.

The delivery was originally planned for October 2013. In September this delivery date had to be postponed due to production delays. The delivery went from the end of December 2013 to the end of January 2014.

First Edition Second Batch (FP1U, 2014)

From May 2014, a second lot could be pre-ordered under the name Fairphone FP1U (“U” for update , ie for an updated version) at a price of 310 euros. 35,000 devices were produced for the second series, of which almost 23,000 devices were pre-ordered and delivered between July and September 2014. Devices were in stock for the first time from September and could be delivered shortly after the order was placed. The last devices in the series were sold and delivered in February 2015.

distribution

Sales are carried out directly through the Fairphone webshop, delivery was limited to Europe. In October 2013, Fairphone announced that it would also sell the Fairphone Second Edition for non-European markets from 2016.

The Dutch cell phone provider KPN bought 1000 units of the Fairphone FP1 and sells them together with a cell phone contract.

sustainability

Support from the manufacturer

Problems soon arose with the delivery of spare parts for the FP1 and FP1U (displays, batteries, motherboards, etc.) as well as with the maintenance of the software. A promised upgrade to Android 4.4 was not completed. The last software update was a bugfix release of Android 4.2.2 published about a year after the delivery of the FP1U. a. Fixed the Stagefright vulnerability . On July 4, 2017, Fairphone ended support for the Model 1, for which long-term support was originally intended.

longevity

Until the beginning of September 2015 it was not clear to what extent the self-imposed goal of creating a durable and sustainable smartphone that would receive software updates for more than three years would be achieved. Since the processor manufacturer MediaTek denied access to the source code of the drivers, an update of the operating system Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) to Android 4.4 ( KitKat ) or the use of alternative operating systems seemed very difficult or impossible for a long time. You should only try to deliver security updates by the end of 2016.

However, on September 16, 2015, Fairphone published a blog entry announcing access to the code and discussing options for longer operating system support or operating system changes.

On June 30, 2016, Fairphone announced in a blog post an upgrade to Android 4.4, but this no longer happened. On July 11, 2017, Fairphone informed the buyers of the First Edition that the upgrade to Android 4.4 would be abandoned and support with spare parts for this model would also be discontinued.

criticism

In some places it was criticized that the Fairphone did not contain any really fair elements and in principle hardly differed from many conventional smartphones, as well as that it used Google's Android operating system instead of alternatives such as Ubuntu Touch or SailfishOS .
