UBports is the name of a joint project with the aim of being able to use the Ubuntu Touch user interface on as many devices with touchscreen controls as possible and thereby avoiding proprietary software if possible . It was founded in 2015 by the then 17-year-old Norwegian Marius Gripsgård .

tasks

UBports has set itself the task of providing developers with the infrastructure for porting new Ubuntu touch devices and working together on improving the porting documentation. The ports for the Nexus 5 , OnePlus One and Fairphone 2 , for example, emerged from these activities . Since November 2019 it can also be installed on Raspberry Pi 3.

history

Tablet with Ubuntu Touch 16.04 OTA-11

After the announcement by Canonical on April 5, 2017 that it would stop developing Ubuntu Touch, it was obvious that UBports could play a key role in the further development of the existing infrastructure. UBports announced that it will continue the development of Ubuntu Touch. Canonical is very cooperative with the project and allows, among other things, the continued use of the protected names and logos.

Canonical also stopped developing the Unity desktop environment . The UBports community has also taken over the further development of Unity 8 / Lomiri . First alpha versions for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS are available for testing.

In October 2018, the new web browser Morph was released for the first time with an update for the stable Ubuntu Touch version 16.04, with improvements to the display on different screen sizes.

UBports Foundation

The UBports Foundation , based in Berlin, was founded in 2019 . This non-profit, legal foundation under civil law provides the developer community with financial, organizational and legal support. It also serves as an independent legal entity to which community members can contribute to the Code, funding, and other resources, knowing that their contributions will be sustained for the public benefit.
