Teardrops from My Eyes , written by Rudy Toombs, is a rhythm and blues song sung by Ruth Brown in 1950 and released by Atlantic Records . The song established Ruth Brown as the leading R&B singer of the time.

General

Before Teardrops from My Eyes was released, Ruth Brown was a singer of sentimental ballads called "Torch Songs". When she was offered the song, she was initially negative about it, because it was so different from her previous music. The president of Atlantic Records , Ahmet Ertegün , had the right instinct and persuaded her to record the song and others he had chosen for her. The song became the first of five number one hits on the Billboard charts . In total, the song stayed on the R&B charts for eleven weeks. Teardrops from my Eyes was also the first Atlantic single to be released on the new 45rpm format.

The song is about a girl who is alone and starts crying every time she thinks of her lover who left her. (" Well, if you see clouds here in my eyes It's just because you said good-bye "). Only when he comes back would everything be fine again (" Remember the night you told me our love would always be I wouldn't be blue and lonely, well, if you'd come back to me ")
