The Teatro-Cine Calatrava is a theater and cinema hall in Fitero , a city in the Spanish autonomous community of Navarre , which was originally built as the new refectory of the former Cistercian Abbey of Santa María la Real .

history

The new refectory was built on the site of medieval monasteries and was completed in 1604. For the construction of this new dining room for the monks, the original stairs leading from the cloister to the dormitory , the old dormitory, the prior's consulting room and the monks' hall were largely demolished. The new dining room was part of the Plateresque wing and the western gallery of the new cloister.

The refectory was used as a dining room until the Cistercian monastery was abolished in 1835 in the wake of the disamortization . From 1843 to 1844 the hall served as a school and from the late 19th century it was known as the Teatro Calatrava theater hall. It was later renamed the Teatro Moderno , from 1915 to 1953 it was called Teatro Gayarre . In 1954 the hall was closed. After its reopening in 1955, it was used as a theater and cinema hall under the name Teatro-Cine Calatrava until 1974 . The hall has been owned by the city since 1981 and continues to operate under this name.

Surname

The name Calatrava recalls the Order of Calatrava , which the abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Fitero, Raimundo Serrat , founded in 1158. The symbol of the order is the lily cross , which is attached to the glass doors, to a ceiling lamp and to the arch above the stage.
