The Teatro Petruzzelli is one of the largest private theaters in Italy. It was built for the then considerable sum of 1,600,000 lire . It was equipped with heating and electricity. The theater was opened on February 14, 1903 with Les Huguenots by Giacomo Meyerbeer .
Completely destroyed by fire, it has been rebuilt since 1991 and opened in 2009 with a concert with the 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven .
The first scenic performance was then on December 6, 2009 Turandot .
