The Tegeler Insel , locally also known as the dog island , is an artificial island in the Tegeler Hafen in the north of the Tegeler See . It belongs to the Berlin district of Reinickendorf . The island with its oval ground plan is around 170 meters long and 60 meters wide.

The Tegeler Insel is incorrectly listed on some maps as the Humboldt Island . This name, on the other hand, refers to the narrow, elongated island between Tegeler Hafen and Tegeler Fließ , which is only 50 meters north of Tegler Insel, as the official maps of the State of Berlin show.

location

The island is connected to the mainland by three pedestrian bridges: Georgsteg in the southwest, Alexandersteg in the southeast and Wilhelmsteg in the northwest.

history

The name dog island comes from the fact that dogs were exported on the island. The island was artificially created in the harbor basin for the International Building Exhibition in 1984 . Various subsequent uses were then planned over a period of 20 years, such as a leisure pool, a senior citizens' residence and a Chinese wellness center. The plan published in 2008 envisaged eleven luxury villas, each with an area of 500 square meters. The 40 million euro building project of an investor based in Moscow was canceled in winter 2008 due to the global financial crisis . In May 2013, GBI Wohnungsbau started a new project to build seven city villas with 49 condominiums on the basis of the preparatory work that had been carried out.
