The Tegeler See is located in the Berlin district of Tegel in the Reinickendorf district . With an area of 450  hectares (including almost 54 hectares of islands), it is the second largest lake in the city after the Müggelsee and forms an approximately five-kilometer-long branched bulge of the Havel and is classified as waterway class  IV. Legally it belongs to the federal waterway Havel-Oder-Wasserstraße (HOW). It is mainly used by water sports enthusiasts and passenger shipping. The Berlin Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible for administration .

location

The word "Tegel" comes from a Slavic root word that means "appendage". And this is exactly what the Tegeler See is: it is an appendage of the Havel. The share of the banks where you can swim is small, but the lake has good water quality and is one of the inner-city Berlin waters with the greatest depth of visibility . The Tegeler See outdoor pool is located in the Tegel Forest on the north-western shore of the lake . In addition, there are several other free bathing spots, three of which are secured by DLRG water rescue stations on summer weekends.

On the eastern side, the lake widens to the Borsighafen, at the rear of the Borsig-Werke . On the opposite side of the Borsighafen, above the wide flight of stairs that lead from the starting point of the Greenwich promenade down to the lake, the slender Borsigbogen by Gerhard Schultze-Seehof (* 1919, † 1976) with picture mosaics has stood since 1954 .

On the north-east bank of the lake, below the “lake terraces” on the Greenwich promenade, are the landing stages of the various shipping companies . The promenade was designed as a long avenue for strolling with benches and children's playgrounds. The northern part of the promenade ends at the Tegeler Hafenbrücke (also called "Sechserbrücke"). It forms the approach to the Tegel industrial port , which was built in 1908 to widen the confluence of the Tegeler River . Large parts of the east bank are owned by boat clubs and are not open to the public. On March 25, 1852, the Vincke – Bismarck duel took place on the lakeshore .

In the Tegeler See (from north to south) are the islands of Hasselwerder , Lindwerder , Scharfenberg , Reiswerder , Baumwerder , Valentinswerder and Maienwerder , some of which contain allotment garden colonies , as well as the Reiherwerder peninsula jutting out into the lake in the northwest with the Borsig Villa Reiherwerder , which used to consist of two separate islands, Großer and Kleiner Reiherwerder . The Gänsewerder peninsula is located south-east across from Reiherwerder . In between, the lake reaches its greatest depth of almost 16 meters.

Although the Borsighafen and the Tegeler Hafen are parts or subdivisions of the Tegeler See according to the Berlin water system, their areas are usually not counted as part of the lake area. This means that the two artificial islands in the Tegeler Hafen ( Humboldtinsel and Tegeler Insel ) are not counted among the islands in Tegeler See.

Opposite the Havel, the lake is bordered in the south by the west bank of Valentinswerder, as well as by the 3.11 hectare peninsula Auf der Hallig (with the allotment garden colony Kleine Hallig), which separates the Tegeler See from the Hohenzollern Canal, and the Kleine Malche , which from the Tegeler See is separated by headlands. Despite being almost completely separated from the open Tegeler See, the Kleine Malche is still referred to as the southernmost bulge of the lake. (The northernmost bay of Lake Tegel, on the other hand, is called Großer Malchsee .) The island of Großer Wall, only 140 meters southwest of Valentinswerder, is therefore already outside of Lake Tegel and is a river island on the Havel.

With regard to the state of pollution with organically degradable material, Tegeler See was the first Berlin body of water to achieve EU quality class II . In June 2017, 14 dogs died of poisoning on Lake Tegel within a few days. An autopsy in the pathology department of the Veterinary Medical Clinic of the Free University in Düppel showed that in at least one case a rare, poisonous blue algae in the lake was responsible.

" Tegelscher See , quite a large lake near the aforementioned village, which is in open connection with the Havel and has 3 small islands."
