history

View from the east bank of Lake Tegel to Lindwerder

Archaeological finds on Lindwerder, the neighboring island of Scharfenberg and the Reiherwerder peninsula prove that the Tegeler See belonged to the Slavic settlement chamber of the Hevellers , who had their headquarters on the former Havel island under the Spandau castle wall .

In the 1930s, the island was expanded from its original size of around 300 m² to its present size by backfilling blast furnace slag from the iron foundry of the nearby Borsigwerke . Wernher von Braun made some of his first rocket attempts on the enlarged island .

natural reserve

The island is part of the LSG-2C Islands landscape protection area in Tegeler See, which was formed in 1960 . Their use is therefore subject to considerable restrictions and in some cases requires special permits from the nature conservation authority, for example in the case of bank extensions and the construction of jetties.
