The Teleférico de Gaia is a cable car in Vila Nova de Gaia on the Douro , the city ​​opposite Porto in Portugal . It connects the Cais de Gaia , the promenade on the Douro, with the Jardim do Morro park on the high bank . It is primarily used for tourist purposes, but is also part of local public transport .

During the journey you have a wide view over the deeply cut valley of the Douro with the old Ribeira district of Porto and the historic Ponte Dom Luís I.

The gondola usually runs at reduced speed so that the passengers can enjoy the view.

At the top and bottom stations, STCP buses provide the connection to the public transport network, and there is also a Metro do Porto stop near the top station .

Technical details

The Teleférico de Gaia is a detachable monocable gondola lift with an inclined length of 562 m and a height difference of 57 m. Its 12 cabins with 8 seats can transport up to 850 people per hour. The cabins are parked in both stations. The electric drive is located in the mountain station, the hydraulic rope tensioner in the valley station.

The cable car was built by Doppelmayr between 2009 and 2011 .
