Cais de Gaia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cais de Gaia (Portuguese for Kai of Gaia ) is a tourist center in Vila Nova de Gaia , Portugal .

The Cais de Gaia refers to the promenade on the southern bank of the Douro , west of the Ponte Dom Luís I and opposite the historic old town of Porto and the Ribeira , both of which have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1996 . The expansion of the coast to a waterfront promenade carried out by the architect Passo de Sousa cost 15 million euros, began in 2000 and lasted three years. After the work was completed in 2003, it was awarded a prize by the Portuguese Tourism Institute. In the same year, the Cais was visited by 2.4 million people. Today, in addition to numerous bars and restaurants , the Cais is also the starting point for boat trips to the Alto Douro wine region and, especially on summer nights, the location for open-air concerts . Since 2004, the Cais has also been the first public uncovered area in Portugal to have a WiFi hotspot installed.
