Telez

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Telez ( Bulgarian Телец ) was the ruler ( Khan ) of the Bulgarian Empire in the area of the Volga estuary between 761 and 765 . He succeeded Khan Winech on the throne. Telez, who belongs to the Ugain house , is described by contemporary witnesses as courageous and assertive.

After he was enthroned , he led a well-trained army that devastated the border areas of the Byzantine Empire . As a result of this provocation, the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V equipped an army and had it loaded onto ships. This force was supposed to land at Anchialos in the north of the Bulgarian Empire , while the Byzantines brought more troops into position on the southern border to encircle the Bulgarians with a pincer movement.

Telez opposed the Byzantine emperor at Anchialos with his troops, but lost the Battle of Anchialos (763), which was costly for both sides . The circumstances of his death are unclear. Some sources claim that he died in battle. Others assume that as a member of the Bulgarian nobility, he was slain by members of the pro-Slav faction, whose troops defected to the Byzantines at the end of the Battle of Anchilos.
