Winech

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Khan Winech (also written Wineh , Bulgarian Винех ) is considered to be the sixth ruler of Bulgaria since the country was recognized in 681 by Eastern Romans (Byzantium) . According to the Bulgarian Prince List , he belonged to the Bulgarian ruling dynasty of the Wokil and succeeded Khan Kormisosch on the throne. Winech ruled from 756 to 760/761.

In 756 the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V defeated a Bulgarian army under Khan Kormisosh near Burdizon (today Babaeski ), which led to the overthrow of the Bulgarian ruler and the seizure of power by Winech. In the same year, Winech attacked Byzantium, but was defeated by Constantine in the Battle of Marcelae in Thrace. He then made a peace with the Byzantines and sent his children to Constantinople to guarantee compliance with the treaty .

In 759 Constantine V marched north again, but was defeated by the Bulgarians on the Rishki pass . Winech's refusal to persecute the Byzantines not only cost them their throne, but also their lives. Khan Telez of the House of Ugain succeeded the Bulgarian throne .

The Vineh peak is named after him.
