From 755 to 775, the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V made at least nine attempts to conquer the Bulgarian Empire and reintegrate the territory into the Byzantine state. However, his efforts repeatedly failed due to the resistance of the Bulgarians. In 759 under the Bulgarian ruler Khan Winech , Constantine V attacked again. However, the Bulgarians were able to inflict defeat on the Byzantines at the Rishki Pass. Constantine was ambushed and a large part of his army was destroyed, he himself was able to flee with a few faithful. The historian Theophanes vividly describes the course of the battle in his world chronicle.
