The Battle of the Rishki Pass took place in 759 between the Bulgarian and Byzantine empires . The battle ended in defeat for the Byzantines.

From 755 to 775, the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V made at least nine attempts to conquer the Bulgarian Empire and reintegrate the territory into the Byzantine state. However, his efforts repeatedly failed due to the resistance of the Bulgarians. In 759 under the Bulgarian ruler Khan Winech , Constantine V attacked again. However, the Bulgarians were able to inflict defeat on the Byzantines at the Rishki Pass. Constantine was ambushed and a large part of his army was destroyed, he himself was able to flee with a few faithful. The historian Theophanes vividly describes the course of the battle in his world chronicle.

However, Winech did not use his strategic advantage after the defeat of Byzantium and took up peace negotiations. The Bulgarian princes did not agree with this policy and had the Khan murdered in 761.
