Tell Tayinat is an archaeological site about 25 km from Antakya on the Amuq plain, in the immediate vicinity of Alalach (Tell Açana). In ancient times the place was probably called Kunulua and was the capital of the late Hittite kingdom of Patina .

Excavations

At Tell Tayinat, excavations by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago took place from 1935 to 1938 . Among other things, monumental column and pillar bases from the 9th and 8th centuries BC were found. In 1936 several fragments of a colossal statue of Halparuntiyas II were recovered.

Excavations at Tell Tayinat have been taking place since 2008 under the direction of archaeologist Timothy P. Harrison from the University of Toronto . The excavations resulted in a royal citadel, which largely corresponds to the citadel of Sam'al about 100 km north. Two construction periods could be distinguished. One building is a typical north Syrian palace of the Hilani type. At the end of the 8th century, the facility was destroyed by the Assyrians , who then rebuilt a citadel. From this phase a temple was excavated.

In June 2012, the top of a colossal statue of the local Hittite king Šuppiluliuma (9th century BC) was discovered.

Archaeological Park

An extensive conservation project was carried out from 2012 to 2016. The excavated leaning brick walls were given a separating layer made of geotextiles and were encased with new clay bricks. In this way, the structures can be stabilized and made accessible to visitors as part of an archaeological park, which also includes Tell Açana (Alalach), one kilometer away. A visitor center with a museum and rooms for research and archiving complete the facility.
