The Yos Sudarso Bay (formerly Humboldt Bay ; also Humboldtbai , Humboldt Bay and Humboldt Bay ) is a bay on the northern Pacific coast of the island of New Guinea in the administrative district of Jayapura the Indonesian province of Papua . The city of Jayapura , which was called Hollandia from 1910 to 1962, lies on it.

The bay is named after the Indonesian naval commander and folk hero Yos Sudarso (1925–1962).

Yos Sudarso Bay

The bay was discovered in 1827 by the French Jules Dumont d'Urville . The area around them became part of Dutch New Guinea , near the border with the German colony Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land , today's Papua New Guinea . It was named Humboldt Bay after the explorer Alexander von Humboldt .

Humboldt Bay played an important role during the Pacific War . In April 1942 it was captured by the Japanese , from April 22, 1944 it was recaptured by the Americans in the course of Operation Reckless and the location of a large US naval base. It served as the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur until the liberation of the Philippines in October 1944 .
