The Temple Synagogue was located near Staryj Rynok Square in the Ukrainian city of Lemberg and belonged to supporters of the Jewish reform movement ; Lviv was one of the first cities to have a reform synagogue. Even before the synagogue was built, the ward received a Torah scroll from the Reformed Church of Long Beach , California .

history

Plaque

A synagogue was built for the first time in the 17th century. From 1843 to 1846 (according to the inscription on today's memorial plaque from 1844 to 1845) the Temple Synagogue (also known as the New Synagogue ) was built on the Old Market Square under the supervision of the architect Johann Salzmann ; However, the building was designed by an architect named Lewicki (full name unknown). The inauguration of the new synagogue took place on September 18, 1846. Rabbis Abraham Kohn , Jecheskiel Caro, Bernard Loewenstein and Jecheskiel Lewin preached there .

It was destroyed by the National Socialists in 1941. Today in its place there is a memorial stone with an inscription in Ukrainian and English:

“This is the place of the synagogue of the Reform Jews, called 'The Temple', which served the intelligentsia of Lviv. It was built between 1844-1845 and destroyed by German soldiers when they invaded Lvov in July 1941. "

architecture

facade

The synagogue was a classic building with a large dome. The inner sanctuary was round, with the seats facing forward toward the bimah . The Torah shrine and the raised pulpit were in the reform style. A double row of balconies reserved for women surrounded the room. The model for the interior of the synagogue was the Vienna City Temple at Seitenstattgasse 4.

Temple Synagogue and the Hasidic Synagogue

Around the same time that the progressive Jews were building their temple, the Lviv Hasidic Jews wanted to build their own synagogue. This was initially not approved. Only after the chairman of the Hasidic community, Jakob Glanzer, a wealthy trader who financed the construction of the Hasidic synagogue, also donated money for the construction of the temple synagogue, the Hasids could start building their synagogue. Thanks to their influence in the magistrate, the progressive Jews were able to delay the opening of the synagogue by two years after the synagogue was completed in 1844. The Hasidic Synagogue was only allowed to officially open in 1846 after a further large donation of money for the Temple Synagogue .
