Temple of Fortuna Euelpis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Temple of Fortuna Euelpis (the Greek epithet Euelpis of Fortuna corresponds latin approximately Bonae Spei , the "Good Hope") was a shrine on the Quirinal in Rome . It lay on the Vicus Longus , the course of which roughly corresponded to that of today's Via Nazionale in Rome.

It was one of the sanctuaries consecrated to Fortuna , which, according to Plutarch , was founded by Servius Tullius . It is unclear whether the sanctuary was near the temple of Spes on the Quirinal or whether there was a temple dedicated to both goddesses. The common cult for both goddesses is proven by coin images. There are no other traditions about the temple, its exact location is unknown. The Latin epithet of the goddess has also not survived.
