Temple-Inland was a United States company headquartered in Austin , Texas . The company was listed in the S&P 500 share index and was taken over by competitor International Paper on February 13, 2012 .

Temple-Inland employed around 19,500 people (as of 2006). Temple-Inland owned subsidiaries Inland Paperboard and Packaging Group , a manufacturer of paper, Temple-Inland Forests Products , a construction company, and Guaranty Financial Services , a financial services company.

The company was founded in Indianapolis , Indiana in 1925 under the name Inland Box Company . In 1973, Time, Inc. acquired Temple Industries, Inc. and merged it with Eastex Pulp and Paper Company to form Temple-Eastex, Inc. In 1978, Time, Inc. acquired Inland . In 1983 these companies were separated as a new independent company under the company name Temple-Inland. In 2002 Temple-Inland acquired the Gaylord Container Corporation .
