The Tennyson Inlet is the southern arm of Pelorus Sound in the Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand .

The Tennyson Inlet covers the approximately 10 km long area between Duncan Bay and Tawhitinui . Tarakaipa and Tawhitinui Island are the two largest islands in this estuary. There are three main settlements that are mainly used for recreational purposes. These are from south to north: Duncan Bay , Penzance Bay and Elaine Bay . There are also the bays Te Mako Bay, Ngawhakawhiti Bay, Tuna Bay, Godsiff Bay, Deep Bay and Tawa Bay.

Penzance and Duncan Bay can be reached via State Highway 6, and Elaine Bay via the Croisilles-French Pass Road. Road access to Elaine Bay was created in 1957. Duncan and Penzance Bay could already be reached in 1960 on today's route through the Opouri Valley . This road was built because of the abundance of wood in the area.

Attractions

Tennyson Inlet is popular for fishing and boating as it is the closest boat ramp to Nelson and Blenheim . Duncan Bay is best known for being the closest point to Nelson where a boat can be put into the Marlborough Sounds. There are hiking trails around part of the inlet connecting the bays with each other. The area's natural and largely unchanged forest is also a well-known attraction. There are many "brooks" or holiday huts here, but only a few permanent residents.
