Quint (musical instrument)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A quint (also called tenor drum, quad or multi toms ) is a percussion instrument that is pitched higher than a bass drum and consists of several drums ( toms ) with different pitch .

A tenor is a mid-pitched percussion instrument that has the same head size as a snare . The drum has been used by composers under various names since the mid-19th century. It was staged especially in the 20th century by the composers Benjamin Britten and William Walton .

use

Tenor drums are used as marching percussion instruments that are commonly played in groups of several people. The size makes it possible that 4 - 6 toms can be carried by one person in order to play several runs or melodies at the same time. Typically there are four large drums, usually either 8, 10, 12, and 13 inches in diameter, or 10, 12, 13, and 14 inches in diameter. In addition, one or two other small drums can be used, they usually measure 6 or 8 inches and are mainly used for accents. The small toms in the middle (also called spock ) are usually pulled as high as possible to achieve maximum effect.

The purpose of the tenors in a marching band, marching band, or drum corps is to bring more color to the music. Movement around the drums make tenors a melodic percussion instrument, as each drum has a different pitch, so it is also very suitable for solos.

Tenors have the lowest tom on the outside left and the second lowest tom on the outside right, which has great advantages in terms of play and physics as there is a balance. Also, the 12 inch tom is in the middle on the left and the 10 inch in the middle is on the right. The four large toms are attached in a slight arch with the opening pointing towards the body. The spocks are placed in the middle, they are attached near the body in the free space created by the arch shape.

techniques

Different playing techniques such as sweeps or crossings by hand allow a wide variety of rhythmic and melodic figures that are possible on tenors. The heads, which are usually played with mallets or drum sticks, are played near the edge of the head. This enables the optimal resonance and the fundamental tone of the drum. It also allows for less side-to-side movements with the upper arm.

If the skin is hit with the stick tip and the tension ring with the stick shaft, this is called a rim shot . This mostly loud tone sounds metallic. A rim shot is mostly used as an accent on the spocks, but it can also be used on the other toms.
