description

The animals reach a head trunk length of 11.2 to 12.8 cm, have a 14.5 to 17.7 cm long tail and reach a weight of 30 to 56 g. The tail is thus on average around 35% longer than the head and torso combined. There is no sexual dimorphism in relation to the shape or size of the skull. The fur on the back and the top of the head are dark brown. The sides of the body are lighter. The hair in the middle of the back is a little lighter than on the top of the head. Around the black eyes there are dark brown circles that do not reach the bases of the ears. The fur on the underside is gray. The hair is long and has whitish tips. The front feet are dark brown, the hind feet light brown. The 10% of the tail, which is close to the body, is hairy, the rest is hairless. The front part of the bare tail section is dark brown and the underside is lighter than the top. The distal half of the tail is unpigmented. Females do not have a pouch. The karyotype is unknown.

Habitat and way of life

The Tepui dwarf pouch rat lives at altitudes of 1,300 to 2,200 meters in damp forests on isolated tepuis. So far nothing is known about their behavior, their diet, their activity patterns and their reproduction.

status

The IUCN does not specify a degree of risk for the Tepui dwarf rat because too little data is available. It occurs exclusively in three relatively small, isolated regions, which are, however, within protected areas.
