Terrantez
Terrantez is a Portuguese white wine variety that is traditionally used for Madeira wine . Terrantez is aged dry, semi-dry and sweet and sometimes produces a very storable wine . The most typical taste characteristic of Terrantez is its bitter finish and ashy, burnt coffee notes.
The Terrantez used to be widespread in Madeira and was also the basis of a dessert wine with the same name. The stocks were drastically reduced by phylloxera at the end of the 19th century . Today the grape variety is rarely grown.
Ampelographic varietal characteristics
In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The yellowish young leaves are hairy like a cobweb.
- The leaves are either not notched or three-lobed. The stem bay is open in a U-shape. The blade is blunt-toothed and the teeth are medium-sized by comparison
- The conical grape is medium-sized and has dense berries. The rounded berries are medium in size and whitish in color.
Terrantez sprouts late, with good fungus resistance to powdery mildew ( powdery mildew and downy mildew of the grapevine ). On the other hand, it is susceptible to gray mold rot . The berries ripen almost 20 days after that of the Gutedel . The grape variety is one of the medium-late ripening varieties.
