The textile sample archive (TMA) as part of the Dornbirn City Museum houses more than 300,000 printed fabric samples and pattern drawings from over 150 years on around 600 m² of exhibition space . The basis of this collection is the almost completely preserved textile sample archive of the company FM Rhomberg (founded in 1834), which went bankrupt in 1993, and other textile companies. The textile sample archive of the Dornbirn City Museum depicts part of the history of textile and textile design.

The collection of textile samples, sample books, textile graphics, models etc. was started by various companies in Vorarlberg in the first half of the 19th century .

In 1993 the company archive of the FM Rhomberg company was partially placed under monument protection, thus preventing individual parts from being sold.

The textile sample archive was opened in May 2009.

The collection includes textile samples of fashionable and folkloric everyday fabrics from the last 150 years. This makes it one of the most important collections of its kind in Europe .

The thematically arranged collection, acquired in 1993 by the Stadtmuseum in Dornbirn , consists of collections from FM Rhomberg and other textile companies from Vorarlberg (Herrburger & Rhomberg from Dornbirn, Carl Ganahl in Feldkirch , Jenny and Schindler from Hard etc.), supplemented by sample books from whole Europe. The extensive graphic collection contains drafts, engraving and repeat drawings, model prints , collection documents, fashion booklets and posters . The holdings are constantly being expanded.

Exhibitions, events, projects, research

The Stadtmuseum Dornbirn offers workshops on textile topics and special exhibitions on local textile culture. Access to the exhibits for innovative project work, diploma theses , dissertations , designers , restorers etc. is granted where possible.

Opening times, archive carrier

The textile sample archive is available on request for viewing and scientific work. It is located at Marktstraße 12a in Dornbirn and there are no regular opening times. For conservation reasons, the visit is only possible under supervision and prior registration. The group size must also be limited to a maximum of 20 people.

The textile sample archive is carried out by the city of Dornbirn and is under the supervision of Hanno Platzgummer.
