The Thälmann Medal , before that also the “Ready to Defend the Homeland” medal , was an award from the Free German Youth of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated in 1951 and awarded once. The award was given to all participants in the peace demonstration of German youth that had taken place on August 15, 1951 in West Berlin . The obverse of the 35.5 mm bronze medal shows the portrait of Ernst Thalmann in front of a red flag , in the upper right corner of which the date: August 15, 1951 can be read. Below the flag is the two-line inscription: READY TO DEFENSE / THE HEIMAT in raised embossed letters. Two crossed oak leaves are shown below this inscription, consisting of two leaves on the right and five oak leaves on the left. A four or five-digit award number can be found on the lower edge of the lapel of the medal, otherwise the reverse is smooth and shows a depression at the point where the portrait of Thälmann's head is on the front of the medal. The medal was worn on a blue ribbon in which two 3 mm wide yellow vertical central stripes were woven on both sides, 3 mm from the hem. In addition, the FDJ symbol and a clasp with the embossed date: 15.8.1951 were on the ribbon . If you only wanted to wear the ribbon, the medal could be hung up.
