The Thuringian forest donkey , also "Mülleresel" or "Steinesel", is one of the medium-sized German house donkeys. It used to be mainly bred in West Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. It is controversial whether the Thuringian forest donkey is an independent breed or just a variant of the house donkey . Because there is currently no stud book and no genetic studies on the basis of which the Thuringian Forest Donkey could be distinguished from other German donkeys as an independent breed, it is not recognized as a breed. Its breeding is therefore not supported by the state of Thuringia within the framework of the promotion of the preservation of old livestock breeds. The Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Pet Breeds (GEH) does not include it on its red list.

The most striking feature is its light coat color, which seems to be mainly due to the breeding line of the Erfurt Zoo, the dark eel line on the back and shoulder cross , as well as the sometimes existing dark stripes on the legs and the whitish mouth (flour mouth).

The adult animals have a shoulder height of 101 to 109 cm, with a weight of 150 to 210 kg.

Today only about 15–20 purely “thoroughbred” animals are said to exist, for example in the Thuringian Zoopark Erfurt , Tiergarten Worms and in the Wildpark Hundshaupten .
