The Worms Zoo is a zoo in the Bürgerweide recreation area in the independent city of Worms . It was opened in 1972 and is approximately 8.5 hectares in size. 80 species with a total of over 500 animals are shown. The focus of the zoo is the keeping and breeding of old domestic animal breeds, such as Glan cattle , Bunte Bentheim pigs , Thuringian forest goats and Ardennes , which are housed in a walk-in show farm . But exotic representatives can also be seen in the zoo.
Zoological facilities
The Worms Zoo is divided into several thematic areas:
The South America facility is a themed area that opened in late 2015 / early 2016 after the old enclosures there from the 1970s were demolished. The animal species that inhabit this part of the zoo include alpacas , South American coatis , pampas hares and rheas , which are socialized together in a larger facility along the visitor path. Also within the South America facility are chile flamingos .
In the adjacent exotic area there is an exotic house, which was last expanded in 2016. The outside area of the ring-tailed lemurs was expanded and the animals were socialized with red varices . The total cost of the expansion came to almost 30,000 euros, some of which was financed by the Sparkasse Worms-Alzey-Ried . Also beside the lemurs resident of the house exotics, are short-eared elephant shrews , ball python , rolling tail iguana , Felswaran , Panther Chameleon , Ornate Horned Frog , Goldaguti , degus , a green iguana and various tropical fish . A brown-bristle armadillo and a white-headed marmoset can also be found in the same area . Adjacent, the visitor can get a glimpse of some aviaries , where one can see the red ibis , the cattle egret , the African spoonbill and the hagedasch ibis . In the immediate vicinity there are, thematically unsuitable, in old enclosures the Amur cat , snowy owl , raven and European eagle owl .
The Africa area is currently home to the tunic baboons and a meerkat colony . Other old enclosures are currently empty. The mane jumpers who also live in the zoo are currently, thematically unsuitable, in the farm area of the zoo.
Visitors can also examine numerous animal species within the Australian area . An unobstructed view of budgerigars , cockatiels , Pennant parakeets , singing parakeets , hunters' nests and parma kangaroos is possible within a walk-in aviary . The entire facility is barrier-free and can be accessed by wheelchair without any obstacles .
The second largest area of the zoo is the Eurasian area . Above all, native species can be seen here. These include the red fox and the arctic fox , but also the European wolf . The latter was housed in a 2400 m² facility in spring 2017, which can be viewed from a raised stand, but also through an earth house that deals thematically with animals that need a building to live underground. Adjacent to the facility is an accessible Eurasian forest, which shows mouflon and fallow deer . The European wild boar can also be viewed here in a separate enclosure. Also adjacent, the visitor will find a facility that houses raccoons .
The largest area is the farm , which shows Glan cattle , colorful Bentheimer country pigs , Thuringian forest goats , southern German draft horses and Palatinate-Ardennes . A new petting facility was set up in 2017. Living free in the zoo, you can find the Westphalian totleger , a breed of chicken threatened with extinction , mostly near the farm . In April 2017, a new 450 m² chicken yard was inaugurated, which houses various chicken breeds in the style of a Rhenish Hessian riding school . The zoo-pedagogical concept of the chicken farm is "to present the development from egg to chicken tangibly and clearly." During the construction phase it was important for those involved that the facility could also be experienced by wheelchair users without any problems. In addition to chickens, there are also rabbits and Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs in the facility itself .
Other facilities and educational program
The zoo meets the zoo's educational requirements with offers from its zoo school, which regularly offers various events, for example the "Animal Employment Workshop". Here, kindergarten or school groups can learn age-appropriate topics on the flora and fauna. Annual events include a. the Stabausfest , the wolf nights, midsummer night tours and the autumn market. Sandy Gass is the head of the zoo.
There is also a children's train called Emma , which does not run through the park, but makes a tour of the central meadow of the zoo.
