Exterior
Broad body with short, stocky legs on long, sloping shoulders and a muscle-packed croup . Ardennes weigh between 800 and 1,000 kilograms, fattening horses often much more. The head is straight or slightly rammed and sits on a powerful, short neck.
interior
Ardennes are reliable, friendly and robust and are very agile and lively despite their massive body. In the past, they were mainly used in agriculture as powerful draft horses, today the Ardennes is mainly bred as a fattening horse with a good meat set. For some time now they have also been used as back horses in the forest.
Breeding history
The Ardennes are considered to be one of the oldest horses in France. The Roman legions valued the Ardennes as well as the knights of the Middle Ages and Napoleon's artillery. During the times of the Crusades and at the beginning of the 17th century, oriental bloodlines were crossed in order to obtain lighter army horses. In the 19th century Brabantians were crossed in order to meet the demand for heavy draft horses . In addition to the heavy types, which are still mainly bred in Belgium , Luxembourg , France and Sweden , efforts are also being made to achieve a lighter sport type by crossing Arabs , the Aratel . The breed is threatened with extinction.
An Ardennes stud book has existed in France since 1908, in Luxembourg since 1921 and in Belgium since 1926.
The now little known breeds Trait du Nord , Auxois , Sweden-Ardennes and Palatinate-Ardennes also emerged from the Ardennes .
