The Trait du Nord is a French workhorse . It is mainly derived from Dutch and Belgian draft horses and from the Ardennes. There has been a stud book since 1919 .

Exterior

The Trait du Nord is similar to the Ardennes , but heavier and larger. It is a particularly strong, heavy (average weight 1000 kg) draft horse with a heavy head, a short and massive neck and a powerful forehand. The croup is strong and sloping with a low tail. It measures around 160–170 cm. Most of the horses are brown, foxes, graver hair is common.

The Trait du Nord has an expansive, energetic walk and trot. It has an energetic temperament, is benign and eager to learn.

Breeding history

Originally it was mainly used in agriculture, today for the production of foals for slaughter .
