Exterior

The exterior of the Auxois is determined by its massive, large-framed body. It is very similar to the Ardennes and Trait du Nord . The auxois has a large, heavy head supported by a short, massive neck. The pronounced withers merges into the short, broad back. The croup and short extremities are very muscular, the joints strong and large. The auxois usually has only a few curtains. The chest and shoulders are also muscular and very massive. Despite the massive build, the Auxois has flowing, spacious, beautiful movements. The height at the withers is 160 to 168 cm.

When it comes to coat color, brown predominates. Red-gray molds, foxes and duns are also less common .

interior

From the interior, the Auxois is friendly and good-natured. This character, which has been emphasized since the beginning of breeding, predestines the animals as workhorses. You are frugal, insensitive, persistent and willing to work.

Breeding history

The Auxois is said to be the Burgundy horse that was often used in the Middle Ages . Because of its massive physique, the horse was often bred for meat production alone. In the 19th century it was purposefully bred as a heavy and powerful draft horse for use in agriculture through crossbreeding of Percheron and Boulonnais . In the 20th century only Ardennes and Trait du Nord horses were used for crossbreeding, which is why the exterior of the Auxois is very similar to these breeds. The main breeding area is in Burgundy in the eponymous region of Auxois, but also in the Yonne , Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire departments .

commitment

The auxois is mainly used in agriculture as a strong workhorse and draft horse. Although the numbers are declining, it is still preferred as a slaughter horse because of its high carcass weight and low bone content.
