Exterior

There are 2 different types that developed in the 17th century. A slightly smaller type who supplied fish markets in Boulogne-sur-Mer - hence the name of the horse breed - and the heavy-duty type for agriculture.

The Boulonnais have muscular legs with short, thick tubular legs, silky fur and a noble head with an oriental character. The height ranges from 150 to over 170 cm. There is predominantly mold in this breed.

Breeding history

Boulonnais horses have been used as war horses in northwestern France since the 14th century. The Boulonnais have influences from three different horse breeds: One from the Spanish horse, which inherited health, enthusiasm and body structure to the Boulonnais. The Arab improved the ability to walk and transmitted his nobility and intelligence. In 1911, efforts were made to make this cold blood breed harder to breed in the hope that it would better compete with motor vehicles.
