The Thuringian Zoopark Erfurt in the north of the state capital Erfurt is the largest zoological garden in Thuringia .
location
Located on the Rote Berg in the north of the city, the Thuringian Zoopark Erfurt offers a view of newer parts of the more than 1250 year old Erfurt, especially the neighboring residential area Roter Berg . The total area of the zoo is about 63 hectares, whereby only about 48 hectares are used zoologically. The non-usable part is a nature reserve, which is essentially dry grass .
The Zoopark can be reached via local public transport by bus line 30, stop “ Thüringer Zoopark ” or by tram line 5 from the main train station to the stop “ Zoopark ” as well as by car, for which there is sufficient parking space.
history
The Erfurt Zoopark is comparatively still quite young. The oldest zoo in Thuringia is the Altenburger Inselzoo from 1954. The zoo park Erfurt celebrated its opening during the GDR era in 1959. The director at that time was Harald Roth. The opening was preceded by almost three years of planning since the decision of the city council in 1956. Originally, another recreation area was planned for the citizens on the Red Mountain, since the Cyriaksburg (today's Ega site ) and the Steigerwald were heavily burdened by the population growth. In addition, there was the idea of being able to view animals.
The first animals included a yak couple from Pamir ( Central Asia ), bison and Kazakh tramples. From the Rostock Zoo one was Asiatic donated and the Dresden Zoo convicted two lions to Erfurt, which were initially housed in Stadtgut and see from Pentecost 1958 in a temporary on the zoo grounds.
The very good approval of the zoo by the population could already be seen in the first year with the number of visitors of around 120,000 people.
Donations made it possible to expand in the following years by purchasing more animals. As early as 1964, the camel herd at the Erfurt Zoo was considered the largest in the GDR.
Animal facilities
The zoo park today includes around 1000 animals from around 133 different species.
Erfurt Aquarium
The Erfurt Aquarium (since 2003), which was located on Nettelbeckufer 28a about four kilometers from the Red Mountain and comprised 228 species, also belonged to the zoo park. Since 2007 the aquarium has had a 50,000 liter reef tank. In March 2017 it was finally closed due to significant structural defects.
Species protection and sustainability
The Erfurt Zoo breeds numerous endangered species and is a partner of the Endangered Species Foundation . He coordinates the European conservation breeding program for the red dog .
