The Thalia is one of the smallest cinemas in Dresden , in the middle of Dresden Neustadt on Görlitzer Straße 6 . The Thalia is a arthouse cinema with a total of 75 seats. The special feature was that smoking was allowed until January 2008, hence the subtitle: “Cinema. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Volkstheater, known primarily as the Thymians Thalia Theater , was located here under the direction of the humorist and folk singer Emil Winter-Tymian . At the point where the cinema is now, there was a box office, restaurant and café . The actual theater hall extended in the courtyard and offered space for up to 700 people. One of the former outer walls of the hall can be seen in the current beer garden .

The theater was opened as Apollotheater in 1889 and renamed Edentheater in 1905 . From 1910 it was called Thymians Thalia-Theater , after 1926 also for a short time Ehtor-Bühne . The main building of the theater was completely destroyed in 1945.

On October 21, 2004, Stephan Raack from Dresden reopened the former theater as an art house cinema. From 2005 to 2014 it was one of 200 winners of the BKM's cinema program award and in 2011 it won the main award for the best short film. 2005 to 2007, 2009 to 2010 and 2012 to 2014 it was one of four winners of the Central Germany Cinema Program Prize.

On September 9, 2008 and September 20, 2011, the cinema in Leipzig was recognized as the best art house cinema in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and is awarded by the Central German Media Fund and the Central German Film and Television Producers Association - criteria for this include the quality of the films and the proportion of German and Central German, European, children's and documentary films.
