Emil Winter Thyme

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Winter-Tymian (born December 18, 1860 in Dresden ; † September 16, 1926 there ) was a Saxon folk singer , salon humorist and theater director .

Life

Emil winter was the son of a Ausgehers . Although he grew up in poor conditions, he continued to educate himself artistically. At the age of 20 he was able to perform as a “salon humorist” because he was a good singer and comedian. In 1895 he was director of the " Roßweiner Singers", their own seven-man men's singing company, which was also known under the name "The dashing Muldentaler". After a particularly successful couplet with the title “The dashing Tymian”, he adopted the stage name “Tymian” (without the h!).

Like every better gentlemen's society back then, Winter's ensemble also had a female actor in its ranks. His name was Fritz Thurm-Silvaré ; a postcard from around 1905 or earlier gives his name and his picture. A postcard from 1901 shows the seven-man ensemble. Another postcard from 1903 shows the complete ensemble “Emil Winter-Tymian's humorists and singers”.

Emil Winter-Tymian made recordings at an early age with the “Gramophone & Typewriter Co.”, where recordings from the years between 1902 and 1905 can be verified.

The Thalia Theater

In 1910 he took over the outer new town of Dresden, which opened in 1889 as the "Apollotheater" and since 1905 it has been run under the name "Edentheater", to which he named the Thalia Theater . The opening was carried out with remarkable advertising expenditure, the theater was advertised with newspaper advertisements and advertising stamps. The latter mostly showed winter thyme even in poses that attracted the public, e.g. B. on modern means of transport such as ship or locomotive, or as a tango-dancing “Dashing Tymian”, or using catchy rhymes such as “I'm going to Tymian today, you laugh at yourself!” For the visit.

Actors who were later successful in stage and film also started at Winter-Tymian's stage, among them Max Gülstorff (1882–1947).

“Tymians Thalia Theater”, or “TTT” for short, became an extremely popular establishment that played from 1911 until Winter's death in 1926. The company was then continued by the comedian Paul Beckers, who was born in Magdeburg . This became famous through the solo of "Fly Bag Heinrich", which Winter-Tymian had written for him.

His programs were not only extremely popular with Dresden residents. His audience came from all over Saxony. The design of his performances was popular and the entrance fees were cheap. In addition to folk pieces and singspiele, variety numbers were also shown. But the decisive factor for the popularity of his stage were Winter-Tymian's own appearances as a folk singer and humorist. Its trump cards were topicality and local flavor. “Many of the highlights became the talk of the town”. His verses became models for whole postcard series.

Winter thyme was also socially committed; Not only did he accept low admission prices throughout his life, but “often invited children from orphanages, gave special performances for disabled children and donated five pfennigs for every ticket sold to help cripples”.

He died of a heart attack in Dresden in 1926. Today, a memorial stone on the facade of the Louisenstrasse 55 building commemorates the popular Saxon artist.
